Episode #22 | Cali Yost: Modern Careers – Embracing Work + Life Fit

“What are we trying to get done? And how, when, and where do we do that best?”

– Cali Yost

As recently as 15 years ago, the thought of “working from home” conjured up thoughts of slacking off and goofing around. Considered a luxurious perk, and one to be granted only under the most extreme circumstances, it’s now having a moment. Thanks to COVID-19, a large portion of the world’s workforce finds itself working from home. FlexStategy Group CEO Cali Yost joined us to explore the long-term implications of this shared experience.

Show Notes

I met Cali over a decade ago, back when the phrase “work-life balance” was often viewed by managers as a quest for working less. Cali never saw it that way. She felt that work was a “what” not a “where” question. In other words, it didn’t matter where the work was getting done; the most important thing was to focus on the right outcome of our professional efforts and then create the environment that was most conducive to achieving our goals.

With the advent of new technology, Cali’s innovative ideas took off. Enter COVID-19. Cali had a global, real-time lab to test her theories around work, productivity, and innovation. In this episode, she shares her insights from the early stages of this journey.

Manisha’s Top Takeaways

  1. In the era of COVID-19, managing our time is as critical as ever before.
In a world of more flexible work arrangements, we will need to play a key role in determining when our work starts and stops, and when the other parts of our lives begin. In other words, we have to be extremely mindful of our time, ensuring that we address and care for the priorities that matter to us.
  2. Redefining success
I loved Cali’s point that, as we adjust our work-life fit over time, we must contemplate how we want to define “success” as it relates to money, prestige, advancement, and even caregiving and community involvement. Is our energy allocation intentionally aligned with that new definition of success?
  3. Celebrate your wins.
Over the years, Cali has witnessed those magical unicorns who glide effortlessly between work and life. The common trait she noticed amongst them was a propensity to celebrate success. And by that, she means that they celebrate what they get done, and don’t waste time beating themselves up over the things left undone. And as a result, they have the energy reserves to focus on creating and enjoying life today and in the future.
